I’m currently watching the Harry Potter movies for the first time. I just finished the second one, and at the end, Professor Dumbledore tells Harry: It’s not our abilities that make us who we are. It’s our choices.
I loved that. I paused the movie and scribbled it down because I knew it was definitely essay-worthy.
In fact, it reminds me of a saying I’ve been giving myself credit for coming up with: God doesn’t judge us for the hand we were dealt…He judges us for how we play that hand. And look, I’m sure I didn’t actually invent that line. It’s way too good not to have been said before.
But I relate to it, because I feel judged all the time; some of it totally unfair (things that have nothing to do with my decisions), and some of it… yeah, maybe I earned a bit of the judgment through mistakes I made along the way.
Which brings me to the point. I think we can all agree that people shouldn’t be judged for what they can’t control; disabilities, circumstances of birth, things like that. No debate needed there.
But what about the other stuff? The choices.
In a way, we are shaped by our choices; not because someone is literally standing over us keeping score, but because consequences are real, and our paths unfold from what we decide day by day. A good choice tends to nudge us toward a good future. A bad one can lead us somewhere we never planned to be.
Here’s the important part though, maybe the most important part: If you realize you’ve taken a wrong turn, you can choose something else, a different path.
Life doesn’t necessarily lock us into a single trajectory. We can usually pivot. We can correct course. Sure, it’s easier if you catch it early, before things get too tangled. But it’s still possible later. It’s almost always possible.
We’re allowed to stop. To take a breath. To look around and say, “Yeah… this isn’t where I meant to end up.” And then we can point ourselves somewhere different and start moving in that direction.
So if you feel like you’ve wandered into the wrong story; Pause. Re-orient. Make a different choice. And head in a direction that feels better.
It’s never too late to choose differently. And that, more than anything, is what defines who we become.
Join us in making the world a better place. You’ll be glad that you did.
Cheers, friends.
