One of the strangest things I noticed when I lived in France wasn’t the history, or even the slower pace of life. It was the Doritos. I’m serious. You could walk into a convenience store, buy a bag of Doritos, and they tasted different. Less artificial. Less like something engineered in a laboratory and more like something that had once been connected to actual food.

That raises an uncomfortable question: “Why don’t more Americans know this?”

We spend enormous amounts of money treating chronic illness. Diabetes. Obesity. Heart disease. Digestive disorders. Autoimmune conditions. Depression. Anxiety. Yet very little public conversation focuses on the quality of the food itself. Of course, health is complicated. There is no single villain. Lifestyle matters. Stress matters. Exercise matters. Genetics matter.

But food matters too.

Why Do Europeans Eat Safer and Healthier than Americans?

Differences between European and American Food Standards

UNITED STATES VS. EUROPE: What ’ s in Your Food?

And, for whatever reason, we’ve accepted a food system that often prioritizes convenience, shelf life, transportation efficiency, and profitability over nutrition. We’ve become accustomed to products with ingredient lists that require a chemistry degree to decipher. We’ve normalized eating food that can sit in a warehouse for months without changing.

Then we act surprised when people don’t feel well.

The solution isn’t complicated, though it isn’t always easy. Buy local when possible. Support local farmers. Eat food your grandparents would recognize. Choose whole foods over ultra-processed foods. Learn where your food comes from. The closer food is to its natural state, the more likely your body knows what to do with it.

Every purchase is a vote. Every meal is a decision. Every trip to the grocery store is an opportunity to support a different kind of food system. One built around nourishment rather than consumption. Because at some point we have to ask a simple question: “Are we feeding ourselves… or merely fueling an industry?”

Your body is keeping score either way.

Your choice.
