I prefer to view minimalism as a philosophy of maximizing efficiency and effectiveness, a philosophy that has always been consistent with my nature. I tend to apply this philosophy to all areas of my life, whether it be learning something new or starting a business.

Unfortunately, as Americans, we have adopted a “more is better” mentality – which is a product of our consumer society that is always in search of the latest and greatest things. And, unfortunately, we have become accustomed to a life of quantity rather than one of quality.
From my experiences living in France, I have come to believe that qualitative living is far better than quantitative living. What do I mean by that? I mean that valuing quality over quantity is a more meaningful way of living. When we prioritize the things that truly hold value in our lives, we find that life becomes more valuable, fulfilling and rewarding.
Warren Buffet is credited as having said, “price is what we pay, value is what we get.” But what exactly is value? It is the concept that we use to define the intrinsic worth and significance of something – whether it be an object, person, or idea.

And even beyond that, you must consider what you would keep and what you would let go of if you were to move into a smaller living space, say a tiny house. This provides a realistic picture of what truly holds value in your life – what you truly need to feel fulfilled and content.
When we “minimize”, we find out just what exactly does have value to us.
The age-old saying; “less is more” rings true in many aspects of life. It’s simple really; the more we accumulate, the more we must maintain and subsequently, the more we have to lose. Larger houses require more upkeep, more cars mean more maintenance and a bigger yard translates to more time and effort. Owning more possessions ultimately means investing more money, time and energy in caring for them. It all seems quite overwhelming, doesn’t it?
Reducing our possessions not only saves us money and time, but it also helps alleviate stress, worry and frustration. With fewer things to worry about, we have more time to devote to activities that bring us joy and fulfillment. It’s no wonder then that I often dream of a life of travel with nothing more than a backpack on my back. I watch videos of successful van lifers on YouTube, both to learn from them and to indulge my inner hippie. It’s easy to get lost in the envy of their carefree lives, but it also motivates me to strive for a simpler and more meaningful existence.
